Most SUVs never leave the tarmac, so the right tyre is usually a road tyre built for the weight. A heavier car puts more load through each tyre, and it needs a load rating to match, so a car tyre in the same size is not always the same thing.

If you tow, use farm tracks or do proper off-road work, an all-terrain tyre is worth a look. The chunkier tread copes much better on gravel, mud and wet grass, though it is usually noisier on the road and gives up some grip on tarmac. A Ranger that works for a living wants something different from a Kuga on the school run.

Mud-terrain tyres go further still, and they are a specialist choice for vehicles that really do leave the road. We can only get them in some sizes, so call us if that is what you are after.

Four-wheel-drive systems can also be fussy. Many do not like a big difference in tread depth between the axles, so replacing only two tyres may not be the right move. Check your handbook, or ask us and we will look at it with you. We do four-wheel alignment here too, which is worth having on anything this heavy.

Are they right for you?

A road tyre suits you if

  • Your SUV stays on tarmac
  • You want a quiet, comfortable drive
  • The school run and motorway make up most of your miles

An all-terrain tyre suits you if

  • You tow on grass, gravel or farm tracks
  • You work a pick-up on rough ground
  • You will accept more road noise in return

Common questions

Do I need special tyres for an SUV?

You need the size, load index and speed rating your vehicle was made for. Plenty of SUV tyres are built for the extra weight, and a car tyre in the same size may not carry the same load.

Do I have to replace all four tyres on a 4x4?

Not always. It depends on the drive system and how worn the other tyres are, as many four-wheel-drive systems do not like a big difference between the axles. Your handbook will say, or ask us and we will check.

Can I use all-terrain tyres every day?

Yes, they are made for the road as well as off it. Expect a bit more noise and a little less grip on tarmac than a road tyre, which is the trade for being better on loose ground.
