A performance tyre is built for a car that asks more of it: more power, harder braking and faster corners. The compound is usually softer and the tread blocks stiffer, which is where the extra grip and the sharper steering come from.

The thing to get right is the rating. Every tyre carries a load index and a speed rating on the sidewall, such as 94Y, and what you fit should meet what your car was made to run on. A cheaper tyre in the right size can still fall short of that, so check before buying on price alone.

Many fast cars also leave the factory on tyres made to the carmaker's own specification, marked on the sidewall with a star for BMW, MO for Mercedes-Benz, AO for Audi or N0 for Porsche. Some run on run-flats, which often means there is no spare wheel in the boot. We will look at both with you before anything is ordered.

The extra grip has a cost. Softer rubber tends to wear faster, and it suffers most when the wheel alignment is out, so it is worth having that checked when a new set goes on. We do two- and four-wheel alignment here.

Are they right for you?

The right tyre if

  • Your car came on W or Y rated tyres
  • You have a hot hatch, sports saloon or fast estate
  • You enjoy the drive and will accept faster wear

You may not need one if

  • Your handbook only calls for a lower speed rating
  • You mostly do town miles
  • Long tread life matters more to you than grip

Common questions

What do the numbers on the sidewall mean?

Take 225/45 R17 94Y. 225 is the width in millimetres, 45 is the sidewall height as a percentage of that width, and R17 is the wheel size in inches. 94 is the load index, and Y is the speed rating.

Do I have to match the speed rating?

You should fit at least the rating given in your handbook. Going below it means the tyre was not made for the speeds the car can reach, and it can cause problems with your insurance.

Can I swap run-flats for normal tyres?

Often, yes, but the car will need a spare wheel or a repair kit, and some cars have their suspension set up for run-flats. Ask us before you change, and we will look at what your car has.
