Despite the name, a summer tyre is not only for summer. It is the standard tyre in the UK, and most cars here run on one set all year. The rubber is firmer than a winter tyre's, which is where the sharp steering, the short braking on warm wet and dry roads, and the long tread life come from.

Where it gives ground is real cold. Below about 7°C the compound starts to harden and grip falls away, and on snow or ice it struggles. For most Birmingham drivers that is a few days a year and worth living with. If your car has to move whatever the weather, look at all-season or winter tyres instead.

The range within summer tyres is wide. Premium tyres usually stop shorter in the wet and last longer; mid-range and budget tyres cost less up front. Every tyre carries an EU label grading wet grip, fuel efficiency and noise, and the tyre search shows those grades, so you can compare them in your own size.

Whichever you choose, replace tyres at least in pairs on the same axle, so both sides of the car grip the same, and match the speed rating your handbook gives.

Are they right for you?

The right tyre if

  • You do normal mileage on UK roads
  • You can stay at home on the odd snowy day
  • You want the best mix of grip, wear and price

Look elsewhere if

  • You have to drive whatever the weather
  • You use hills or rural roads in frost and snow
  • You would rather never think about the season

Common questions

Can I use summer tyres in winter in the UK?

Yes. They are legal all year and most UK cars use them through the winter. They lose grip in real cold, snow and ice, so drive to the conditions, and consider all-season or winter tyres if you cannot avoid bad weather.

What is the legal minimum tread depth?

1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread, all the way round the tyre. Grip in the wet falls away well before that, so many drivers replace at around 3mm.

Do I have to replace all four?

Not always. Replace at least the pair on one axle, so both sides grip the same. If the other pair is close to worn too, doing all four at once often makes sense.
