Find winter tyres for your car
A winter tyre is not only for snow. The rubber stays softer as the temperature drops, and the tread is cut with fine slits that bite on cold, wet and icy roads. The usual rule of thumb is that it starts to beat a summer tyre once it is regularly below about 7°C, which covers a good part of a Birmingham winter.
They are not a legal requirement in the UK, so this comes down to how you use the car. If you can stay at home when it snows, you probably do not need them. If you have to get to work, do the school run or cover quiet rural roads first thing in the morning, they are worth a serious look.
Fit all four. Two on one axle leaves the car with very different grip front and rear, which is the last thing you want on a slippery bend. Then swap back in the spring, because a winter tyre wears faster on warm roads.
A second set of wheels makes that changeover quicker, as the tyres stay on the wheels. Vans are covered too: if a Transit has to keep working through the winter, there are winter tyres built for the load.

Are they right for you?
Worth it if
- You have to travel whatever the weather
- You cover hills or quiet rural roads early in the morning
- You drive to Europe in the winter
- You run a van that cannot stop working in the cold
You can probably skip them if
- You can leave the car at home when it snows
- You mostly do short trips around town
- You have nowhere to keep a second set
- An all-season tyre would cover what you need
Common questions
Are winter tyres a legal requirement in the UK?
No. Some European countries do require them at certain times or in certain conditions, so if you are driving abroad, check the rules for where you are going before you set off.
When should I fit winter tyres?
Most people swap around October or November and go back in March or April. Winter tyres are a much smaller part of what suppliers carry than summer tyres, so it is worth checking your size before the first cold snap.
How can I tell if a tyre is a winter tyre?
Look for the three-peak mountain snowflake on the sidewall, which shows it has passed a snow performance test. M+S on its own is the maker's marking and does not mean the same thing.
